Objective: Compose a simple melody on the recorder using more
than one note. Create a soundscape of the seasons.
Materials: Red Sings from Treetops, recorders, color cards
Process:
1. Review whatever notes the kids know so far (BAG, for example). Echo short phrases that
practice switching between notes.
2. Pass out a color card to each student. They should find their matching colors (green works
with green, for example), and then work for five minutes with that partner to create a short
melody that uses at least two notes (or whatever parameters you desire). They should come
up with an idea that they can play exactly the same each time (composing, not
improvisation).
3. Read the book with the class, and pause after each color that’s read so that that group can
play their melody.
